Does Baby Formula Expire?

Confused about baby formula expiry dates? You're not alone. From unopened tins to once-opened cans, we break down everything you need to know to keep your baby safe

Published on

With so much conflicting information out there about whether baby formula expires and whether it’s safe to use right up until the expiry date once opened, it’s easy to feel confused. No parent wants to accidentally give their baby expired formula, and it turns out that simply following the instructions on the tin isn’t always enough.

As we’ve seen with recent formula recalls, it’s a worrying thought that you could be feeding your baby something you believed was perfectly safe, only to discover otherwise. That’s why understanding the rules around formula and expiry dates is so important.

At Baby’s Pantry, we only stock premium European formula to give parents complete peace of mind that they’re giving their baby the very best. That said, let’s break down exactly what you need to know to keep your little one safe.

Does Unopened baby formula expire?

Unopened formula can generally be used right up until the expiry date, provided it has been stored according to the manufacturer’s instructions and handled with care, meaning the seal is intact, and the tin isn’t damaged or dented.

When your European baby formula arrives, the expiry dates are usually printed on the bottom of the can. A good habit is to check these dates as soon as your order arrives and store your tins in order of expiration, so you’re always using the ones closest to their date first (just like how supermarkets restock their shelves).

Something worth being aware of: some formula sellers simply ship whatever stock they have available, which can mean you receive tins with only a few weeks or months left before they expire. So it’s really important to check the dates as soon as you receive your products.

We know that’s the last thing a busy parent needs to worry about. That’s why every product we send out comes with a guaranteed minimum six-month shelf life. We also offer a subscribe and save option, so your formula arrives right on schedule without you ever having to think about it.

How Long Does Baby Formula Last Once Opened?

Once a tin of baby formula has been opened, the printed expiry date no longer applies. Most formulas will remain safe to use for between four and six weeks after opening, provided they’ve been stored correctly and kept free from contaminants.

The exact timeframe varies by brand and will be clearly stated on the tin so always check this when you first open it.

It’s important to note that baby formula is not like other food products where you might use your judgment about whether something is still safe past its date — think of a banana that’s a little overripe but still perfectly fine to eat. Baby formula doesn’t work that way. European baby formula manufacturers are held to very specific and stringent guidelines, which means the shelf life once opened is precise and should be followed exactly.

Unfortunately, formula can’t be frozen or refrigerated to extend its life once opened, so it’s worth keeping track of when you first broke the seal and making sure you’re using it within the recommended window.

How to Tell If Baby Formula Has Gone Off

If you’re ever unsure whether your formula is still good, start by checking for an unusual smell, a change in colour, or a difference in consistency. Other common signs include clumping or your baby refusing a bottle they would normally accept.

At the first sign of anything being off we’d recommend stopping use immediately and discarding the contents. It’s always better to be safe.

If your baby does ingest formula that may have spoiled, keep a close eye out for signs of discomfort, including vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach cramps, fussiness, abdominal swelling, weakness, or a reduced appetite. If you notice any of these, particularly alongside a fever, call your paediatrician straight away.

That said, if you catch it quickly and they haven’t had much, babies are generally okay and it rarely leads to serious illness.

What to do with expired baby formula

Nobody likes waste, and when formula is as expensive as it is, it feels especially frustrating to have to throw it away. While expired formula can’t be donated to shelters or food banks as it simply isn’t safe for any baby at that point, it doesn’t have to go straight in the bin.

Expired baby formula actually works wonderfully as a plant fertiliser. The preserved nutrients break down well in compost, so at least something good can come of it.
