Following Nestlé’s recent global recall of specific SMA baby formula batches, many parents are understandably seeking clarity and safe alternatives. The recall has now been significantly widened, with nearly 80 batches affected, including some products that may have entered Ireland through indirect supply chains.

This guide explains exactly what the updated recall means, what parents should do right now, how to check affected batch numbers, and which trusted European baby formulas many families are choosing as safe alternatives.

If your baby currently uses SMA or related Nestlé formulas, this article will help you make informed next steps with confidence.

Why Has Nestlé Recalled These Baby Formula Products?

Nestlé initially issued the recall after identifying the potential presence of cereulide, a toxin produced by certain strains of the bacterium Bacillus cereus. While no confirmed illnesses have been reported, the recall has been issued as a precautionary measure.

New Update – 14 January 2026

The recall has now been expanded to nearly 80 batches of SMA infant and follow-on formula products. Authorities have confirmed that some of the affected batches may have been imported into Ireland from the UK via indirect supply chains. Recall notices are now being displayed at point-of-sale locations.

According to the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI):

  • Cereulide is extremely heat resistant and cannot be destroyed during normal formula preparation.
  • Consumption can lead to nausea and severe vomiting, typically appearing within five hours.
  • Symptoms usually last between six to 24 hours.
  • There have still been no confirmed reports of illness linked to the recalled batches.

Nestlé has stated that the recall was widened “out of an abundance of caution” and reassured consumers that the overall guidance remains unchanged.

What Should Parents Do Right Now?

If your baby uses SMA or another Nestlé formula, follow these steps carefully.

1. Check Your Batch Number

Batch codes are printed on:

  • The base of powdered formula tins
  • The outer box or container for ready-to-feed formula

You can find the full list of recalled batch numbers on:

Because the recall has expanded, even if you previously checked your product, it is important to recheck the batch code against the updated list.

2. Do Not Use Affected Formula

If your product matches a recalled batch:

  • Stop feeding it immediately
  • Do not attempt to boil or re-prepare it
  • Safely dispose of the product as advised by the manufacturer

3. Request a Refund

Nestlé has advised consumers to contact their careline or submit a photo of the product and batch code for a refund.

4. Speak to a Healthcare Professional if Needed

If your baby has consumed an affected batch and you have any concerns, contact:

  • Your paediatrician (US parents)
  • Your GP or NHS 111 (UK parents)
  • Local health services if symptoms appear
